Greenwich, Connecticut, boasts a stunning coastline along Long Island Sound, making it a haven for boaters and water enthusiasts. With its well-maintained marinas and extensive boating facilities, Greenwich provides residents and visitors with excellent opportunities to explore the water. This guide offers an overview of the marinas in Greenwich, CT, the exceptional services available to boaters, and insights into Greenwich’s vibrant waterfront lifestyle.

Explore Greenwich’s Boating Community

Greenwich is home to a thriving boating community supported by its three well-equipped marinas: Byram, Cos Cob, and Grass Island. Each marina offers unique benefits tailored to various boating needs, from slips and storage to dry sailing and winter options. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a recreational kayaker, Greenwich’s marinas provide the perfect gateway to enjoy the scenic waters of Long Island Sound.

Here’s a closer look at the three main marinas in town:

Byram Marina

Located in the western section of Greenwich, Byram Marina is a favorite among local boaters. It offers around 170 slips, the largest of which can accommodate boats up to 26 feet in length overall and 8.5 feet in beam width.

This marina offers convenient access to Long Island Sound and features a range of services, including boat slips and launching ramps. With its scenic views and proximity to parks and amenities, Byram Marina provides a perfect spot for both recreational and serious boaters. The marina also has a vibrant community atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for those who value camaraderie among fellow water enthusiasts.

Cos Cob Marina

Situated along the Mianus River, Cos Cob Marina is another popular option for Greenwich boaters. It provides approximately 175 slips, with the largest designed for vessels up to 28 feet in length overall and 8.5 feet in beam width.

This marina offers easy access to the river and sound, making it ideal for smaller vessels and kayakers. Cos Cob Marina is well-known for its dry sailing facilities and convenient rack storage options, catering to both active sailors and those looking for a low-maintenance boating experience. The marina's central location within Greenwich ensures that boaters are close to local restaurants, shops, and other amenities.

Grass Island Marina

Grass Island Marina, located near Greenwich Harbor, is an excellent choice for those seeking a full-service marina with ample slip availability. It features about 150 slips, the largest capable of handling boats up to 38 feet in length.

This marina offers direct access to Long Island Sound and features facilities for both large and small vessels. Grass Island Marina’s proximity to downtown Greenwich makes it a convenient hub for boaters who want to enjoy the town’s shopping and dining scene after a day on the water. It is a highly sought-after marina for residents looking for premier boating access.

Boating & Marina Services in Greenwich, CT

Greenwich marinas are equipped with a range of services designed to meet the needs of the local boating community:

  • Boat Slips: Slips are available at Byram, Cos Cob, and Grass Island marinas and are assigned based on a vessel's length overall (LOA). Due to demand, slips are allocated through a waitlist process managed by the Parks and Recreation Department at Town Hall.

  • Boat Launches: Launching ramps are available at all three marinas for boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and other watercraft. A valid Facility Use Permit is required for access.

  • Dry Sailing: Active boaters can take advantage of dry sailing facilities at Cos Cob, Grass Island, and Greenwich Point. Boats must be operational and ready for use during the boating season.

  • Rack Storage: Kayaks, paddleboards, and small watercraft can be stored on racks at all marina locations. As with boat slips, rack space is assigned via a waitlist.

  • Trailer Storage: Trailer storage is available from April 15 to November 15. There are specific requirements for trailers and sticker placement.

  • Winter Storage: Seasonal storage is offered from September 1 to June 15, ensuring secure options for boats during the off-season. Late fees apply for vessels remaining after the deadline.
Residents waiting for a slip or rack can still access Greenwich’s waterways through moorings or by obtaining a Facility Use Permit for temporary access.
