Alarming Surge in Pedestrian Fatalities: A Call for Urgent Action to Save Lives on US Roads
Pedestrian fatalities in the United States reached a staggering high in 2022, with 7,508 unfortunate souls struck and killed by cars. It's like a throwback to the '80s, but definitely not a cool one. According to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), pedestrian deaths have skyrocketed by a mind-boggling 77% since 2010, while all other traffic-related deaths have only increased by 25%. Talk about going the extra mile, or in this case, the extra fatal mile. If you're planning a stroll, you might want to avoid New Mexico, Arizona, and Florida, where the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents were recorded. And get this: pedestrians are twice as likely to become fatally hit at 30 mph compared to 20 mph, and a whopping five times more likely at 40 mph. Nighttime is also prime time for pedestrian fatalities, so watch your step after the sun goes down. As GHSA CEO Jonathan Adkins aptly puts it, "Every day, 20 people go for a walk and do not return home." It's a tragic reality, but preventable. We need better infrastructure, slower speeds, and a crackdown on risky driving behaviors. Thankfully, the government is stepping in with proposals for higher safety standards, including automatic emergency braking and pedestrian-detection technology. Let's hope we can put the brakes on this deadly trend and make our sidewalks safer for everyone.
